Moving forward...beta, sperm counts and next steps..

So...many might be wondering...what the heck is a beta?    It is blood test for checking if you are pregnant. So, every cycle, 10 days after my surge/ovulation/date night....I would go back to SOFT for another quick blood test.   They would check for my HcG (Human chorionic Gonadotropin )hormone and see if it is greater than 5.  The higher the better and anything less than 5 is a clinical negative.  If there was a positive you would go back to the clinic in a day or so...the levels should double and continue doubling for awhile.   So...that's right ladies....no more peeing on a stick!!  Yay!

So...unfortunately our beta's did not like us...so we continued our investigations.   Next up...Dennis's turn.  Blood work and a date with a cup(semen analysis later and we find out his counts and motility were low...another very common yet not talked about fertility problem.  This news was quite a blow.  Up until now we had assumed that...it just wasn't time yet, we were thinking about it too much.   I remember sitting in the Dr's office at SOFT and her telling me how we had a 1% chance of conceiving naturally, 14% chance with IUI (Intrauterine Insemination) and 35% chance with IVF(In-Virtro Fertilization).  She started talking processes, costs, my head was swimming with numbers and thoughts of where do we go next... Interesting note from one of the SOFT information packages available on line about IUI's:

10-15% doesn‟t seem very high but remember a 25 year old couple having intercourse at the time of ovulation has only a 15-25%
chance each cycle

So...with that inspiration in mine we forged ahead...Dennis started on SOFTs protocol to help improve his counts.  Up next IUI's and the decision of when to pursue and IVF..since our chances were higher
